The first son of Vaughn and Lucy, Vaughn 3 (whom we nicknamed Chip) was a joy from the day he arrived at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix Arizona. In the spring of 1966, the family would relocate to Apeli Drive in Tempe, Az when his dad joined the staff at Arizona State University. Growing up and attending Broadmore, McKemy Junior High and Tempe High School was full of exciting school years. Vaughn excelled in track at both McKemy and Tempe High. He was also on the High School cross country running and wrestling teams. He loved school, lettered in sports and because of his natural good looks, always seems to have the girls looking his way. Vaughn was an excellent student and tapped into a natural talent during a Junior year photography class where he did studies in black and white. He seemed to have an eye for content and instinctively knew what created good composition. He took this photo of the Tempe bridge on a study on curves, which still hangs on the wall.
In October 1980, Vaughn was involved in a motorcycle accident and sustained a serious head injury. This would alter his path as he fought to find balance in a forever changed future. Vaughn was a fighter and against all odds, made progress beyond all medical expectations. Amazingly with that something called "motherly love" and the strong support of his four siblings, Tracy, Kenton, Laura and David, he was able to rebuild a rich, independent future for himself. After growing up in Tempe and spending years there, in May of 2003 he moved to North Carolina, just outside of Raleigh, into his new 3 bedroom home on two acres in the rural community of Wake Forest. Here he found the quiet, peaceful place he longed to be where he could enjoy the serene beauty of the nature around him.

As an avid cyclist, Vaughn enjoyed
the ability to take long rides through the tall pines and rolling hills
that surrounded where he lived. One of his passions was the garden he planted each year where he raised enough vegetables to supply not only his needs but enough to share with his neighbors. He was very happy in North Carolina as he so often expressed when saying that he had found the place that he called "Home". His friendly outgoing nature allowed him to make friends where ever he went be it a craft fair, farmers market, shopping or cycling through his neighborhood. He spent much of his time doing those "little random acts of kindness" for strangers and the neighbors who had all grown to love him so. With his sister, Laura and brother David and Melissa living close by in Raleigh, and brother Kenton a few hours away. he was surrounded by family that he loved.
Vaughn had truly found his peaceful place and he felt very Blessed.

Vaughn loved all living things and particularly animals and he did whatever he could to insure that he was helping make the world a better place for all living things.
He would love that in his passing, he could still continue to change the lives of animals through donations. His sister-in-law, Melissa, an animal caregiver as a Vet, researched animal charities and suggests donations to ASPCA because of the variety of work they do and the high percentage of each donation that is actually used for animal care. |
